Education

The Challenge

Education is a basic human right for all children. One of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals encourages governments to make education free for all children. However, the quality of the education received varies significantly and unfavourably for children living in extreme poverty and in rural areas. Most are unable to afford uniforms, books, stationary and all the necessary requirements for a good education compounded by daily hunger because there is no food at home or in school. Children walk miles to get to school and young girls especially are vulnerable to being abducted and finding themselves pregnant.

In Sub-Saharan Africa over one-fifth of children between the ages of about 6 and 11 are out of school, followed by one-third of youth between the ages of about 12 and 14, and almost 60% of youth between the ages of about 15 and 17 are not in school.

Developing communities are experiencing global economic instability because of the pandemic, global hunger crisis, rising costs of living and climate changes. One in two children are growing up in poverty meaning over one billion children are denied their fundamental right to education, safety, good healthcare and nutrition.
