Women Empowerment

The Challenge

It is estimated that there are 388 million women and girls living in extreme poverty and that 75% of women in developing regions are in the informal economy – where they are less likely to have employment contracts, legal rights or social protection, and are often not paid enough to escape poverty.

The Solution

Our programmes train women on basic money skills and provide support to set up petty businesses so they can look after themselves and provide for their children. A significant amount of the women will be single parents or widows whom themselves have struggled with extreme poverty and want something different for their children. Empowering women will ensure that her family can receive an education, health care and nutrition.

The Result

Lydia, a single mum in one of the poorest communities. Lydia was part of a community cooperative, and she was supported to buy a cow from which she sent three of her children to university. The cow provided milk, which was turned to yoghurt and sold, and she built a biogas tank storing methane, generated from cow dung, that provided fuel to her cooker for cooking.

Judith who leads a group of widows living with HIV in Africa. Through sustainable livelihood projects like a vegetable garden and a cow horn ornament workshop where they make accessories to sell, they can support themselves and their children.

Fresh Inspiration has so many women like these who need support. One woman brings hope to her family, many women bring hope to humanity.
